This module covers the basic aspects of climate and weather as it impacts on the activities and the coastal and sea conditions along the coast. The Southern African coastline is used as the main example, but the same principles apply equally to other parts of the globe.
It is relevant to all tourism operators and businesses that conduct tours along the coastline and at sea by boat trips. This applies to activities such as walking, hiking, whale watching, bird-watching, nature trails, canoeing, diving snorkeling and so on.

It is important to understand the difference between weather and climate, and be able to predict weather and changes to weather.Safety must be the first priority of customers, and as we all know the coast and sea can be treacherous - more so if it is not understood. Sea conditions are most affected by wind and to a lesser degree by temperatures, so it is essential to recognize the contributing factors to weather and sea changes, what causes them and how they develop, to the extent that we all become weather forecasters of local areas.

The course consist of a short PowerPoint Presentation and a detailed video that attempts to explain the concepts in sufficient detail.There are simple Assignments and a sjhort multiple choice quiz that need to be successfully completed, whereupon we will issue you with a Certificate of Completion as evidence that you went through the course.

COMET Corporation, as part of it's Community Upliftment Program has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Western Cape Government earlier this month.

In this MOU, COMET will commence delivery of e-learning courses through the Cape Access community centres in the Western Cape, starting with a pilot initiative at 3 centres first. The 3 centres selected for the pilot are at Hawston, Vredenburg and Langebaan.

The idea is to provide short learning courses for communities, both coastal and inland to encourage the development of Alternative and Sustainable Livelihoods for impoverished community members. The initiative started with targeting the Coastal Fishing communities that have been severely compromised by both the ongoing over-fishing in SA waters in the past years, and the failure by DAFF to properly allocate fishing rights for the last two allocation rounds. These communities that rely on fishing, both commercial and subsistence, are now struggling with unemployment, rising crime, violence and substance abuse, and need to start developing alternative income streams.

The project has however, now expanded to include all communities, both coastal and inland, where the same or similar problems exist. COMET will first evaluate applicants who wish to enrol in courses, and then open the courses up to suitable learners who have identified what they would like to do. Courses are delivered via e-learning, using a Learning Management System (LMS) that has been provided by Penny Ferry Training for the purpose. The LMS is not close to being fully populated with course material as yet, but is growing rapidly and will be built depending on the community requirements.

Initial work was started at the 3 pilot centres 2 weeks ago, and training is expected to commence within the next 2 weeks.

Most Corporations and Businesses have to train their staff in order to keep competitive in a technologically changing and evolving marketplace. Employee satisfaction and competence comes partly through providing an ongoing stimulus of training and empowerment of the individual in the workplace. Training using lecturers or trainers has become prohibitively expensive, and often not feasible. A lot of Awareness Training is sometimes necessary before conducting actual focused training, and the combination of achieving these means hours of time, effort and cost. E-learning will not solve it all, as the interaction with a subject matter expert (SME) is still required. However, e-learning training and awareness as offered by Comet.Training goes a very long way of uplifting basic knowledge and understanding of the learner, so that when face to face sessions with SME's can occur, it is more efficient and more effective.

Training and Awareness Courses offered here are cost effective and have no time limit - once registered, the learner can take as long as necessary to complete the course, repeat it over and over and do it in private without being embarassed about slow progress and/or inability to grasp concepts the first time. A Certificate of Completion is issued for most courses as evidence that the course was successfully completed.
