The course is an informative and awareness about the African or Jackass Penguin, found at certain locations along the Cape Southern and West Coast, some being breeding colonies.

These birds are on the “threatened’ list and if we are not careful, are heading for extinction.

The module consists of a short Video giving an overview of their habitats, habits and characteristics, useful for those involved in the nature tourism industry.

It is an awareness course only, and has no quiz or certificate associated with it.

Objectives

To give a knowledge and understanding of the African Penguin.

This species is endemic to Southern Africa and an important tourist attraction. Unfortunately it is threatened by extinction, and therefore the course gives information on threats in the hope that the birds can become more protected.

Target Audience

All personnel employed or involved with marine and Coastal Tourism and the Hospitality Industry. In addition, it is interesting and useful knowledge for those keen to learn more about the species.

Learning Outcomes

An ability to understand and talk knowledgeable about the African Penguin, it's habitats, breeding and mating characteristics and threats to it's survival.

Scope & Requirements

The course is presented on-line in the form of a short Video, Presentation Material, Course Notes and a Short Quiz.

Access via computer and internet is required.
